Former Greek President Karolos Papoulias has died!

Papoulias, who also served as foreign minister from 1985 to 1989 and from 1993 to 1996, was a senior member of the socialist PASOK party and a close ally of its late leader and former prime minister, Andreas Papandreou.

President Katerina Sakelaropoulou paid tribute to Papoulias for his role in resisting Nazi occupation during World War II and against the Greek military junta from 1967 to 1974.

“His participation in the national resistance and the struggle against the dictatorship reflects his continued commitment to the ideals of freedom and justice, which he has defended throughout his life,” Sakelaropoulou said in a statement.
