Tottenham boss Antonio Conte says Harry Kane is one of the best strikers he has worked with, despite his poor form this season.
The England captain, who won the Premier League Golden Shoe last season, has scored just once in 14 league appearances this season.
Conte, who has been at the club since early November, has coached Carlos Tevez, Diego Costa and Romelu Lukaku in the past, but ranks Kane among the best ahead of Sunday’s game against Liverpool.
“Every day I train him, I understand very well that he is a world-class striker.” He is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of training. He is wonderful. I love having him on my team.
“Of course Jurgen [Klopp] likes to have Mo Salah, but I like to have Harry on my team.”
“He is an important player for us and my expectation was very high to play an important game against Liverpool.”
Kane scored 23 goals and made 14 last season, but his inability to repeat that level so far this season is probably understandable. He led England to the final of what was actually a home tour before losing with a penalty at Euro 2020 over the summer and was subsequently subject to a transfer sage involving Manchester City. However, Conte is not judging Kane for his numbers.
The Italian said about Kane’s lack of goals: “It is very strange, isn’t it? It’s very strange.
“If you compare what he did in the past, this is very strange, but also in the past, in my experience, first as a player and then as a coach, it happens.” I have played with important strikers, who – for a long time – did not score, but my judgment of them did not change.
“I wanted to have them on my team even if they do not score. “Because if you have Harry Kane in your team, you certainly feel stronger”, the Italian technician concluded.
